More updates arrive on Felicity Ace, the cargo ship that went up in flames due to a fire that broke out in the hold on Wednesday 16 February near the Portuguese Antilles, precisely south-west of the island of Faial, around 11:30 local time (13:30 Italian ), with almost 4,000 cars on board, most of the Volkswagen group, destined for the US market. After several days with the boat engulfed in fire and still on the high seas – it was headed for the port of Davisville, Rhode Island (north-east of the USA), only to be immediately abandoned by the 22 crew members, rescued by the emergency intervention by the Navy and the Portuguese air force -, on February 22, the operations to extinguish the flames began, which ended the following day thanks to the intervention of the local rescue teams and two large tugs arrived from Gibraltar.

In the latest update on February 25 of the site of Mitsui Osk Line (Mol), or the Japanese company that owns Felicity Ace -, “the smoke that spread for days after the flames went out has stopped, and there are no oil leaks on the ship – it is written – while two tugs, Alp Guard and Dian Kingdom, together with the rescue vessel VB Hispanic, are escorting the ship “. Soon, the note concludes, a solution will be found to put the vehicle to safety between Mol, the teams that are acting and the local authorities. In the end, inside the Felicity Ace, there are not only 2,500 cars as was leaked after the accident, but 3,965 vehicles of the Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini and Bentley brands, destined for US buyers.

The first estimates of the damages

It is from Volkswagen that there is a great deal of concern, and if at the moment there is still no official status on the cars that were destroyed in the flames, “we fear that a large number of them, on board, will not be able to be delivered to our customers”, wrote the company. through a press release issued by Automotive News Europe. According to internal estimates, the fire could cost the German company damages for 155 million dollars (137.50 million in euros), while the buyers have already been informed through the purchase dealers, with “the damage – explains VW – which will be covered by our insurance “. This week, further assessments came from the Russell Group – a network of 24 UK universities, two-thirds funded by the UK – which a Bloomberg spoke of an onboard car value of approximately $ 401 million (almost € 356 million), just under the estimated $ 438 million (€ 388.55 million) total cargo that Felicity Ace was transporting to the US .
