Chicago: One-year-old child shot – DER SPIEGEL

In Chicago, a 22-year-old mother was driving back from a laundromat and had her 20-month-old son in the back seat when another car stopped. An inmate started shooting and fired eight bullets. One fatally hit the child in the chest, one brushed the mother’s head.

The “drive-by shooting” took place on Saturday afternoon (local time) around 2 p.m. in Chicago’s Englewood district. The little boy was sitting in the child seat on the back seat of the red car. His mother drove him to the hospital, but the doctors could only declare the child dead.

So far there have been no arrests, and the weapon has not yet been discovered. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Chief Inspector David Brown called on witnesses to report information to the police. Everyone in town should be outraged by the violence, Brown said. For the arrest of the perpetrator, rewards have since been suspended by several groups totaling $ 39,000.

The firearm attack on mother and child occurred only a week after a three-year-old was killed in similar circumstances in western Chicago. The father was traveling with the boy in an SUV; strangers opened fire. “We will catch the person who killed the three-year-old child. And we will catch the person who killed this child,” said Fred Waller, head of the Chicago Police Department.

“This happens far too often,” said Waller. “Too often children are killed by senseless violence, and adults too. When does that stop? When do we say: Enough is enough?” “I’m tired of the funerals. I’m tired of burying our children,” said Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Also on Saturday, a 17-year-old youth was killed by gunfire. The one-year-old boy was already the fifth child under the age of ten to have been shot in Chicago in the past ten days alone, according to CBS.
