A car thief broke two roadblocks in southern Ticino early on Friday morning and was only stopped by a police officer shot. On his escape, he endangered the lives of several officers and damaged police cars.

The car theft by two people in Chiasso TI was reported to the police on Friday at around 1 a.m., the public prosecutor and cantonal police announced. The police immediately started the search. Patrols searched for the vehicle with the assistance of the border guard and the Mendrisio city police.

When it was found, the man behind the wheel fled. He broke two police roadblocks. The fugitive put the lives of various officers in danger and damaged two patrol cars.

In Chiasso, the officers were finally able to intercept the escape vehicle. After the perpetrator rammed another patrol vehicle, a police officer picked up a gun and fired. That finally stopped the fleeing man.

The car thief, a 55-year-old Libyan asylum seeker from the federal asylum center in Chiasso, was arrested. He was unharmed. His accomplice had already got off the car at an intersection in Chiasso and fled. The police were still looking for him around noon.

The crime and the exact circumstances of the shooting are the subject of investigations by the public prosecutor. The Libyan has to answer for theft, endangerment of life, violence and threats against the authorities, traffic regulations violations and obstruction of official acts.
