Leslie Van Houten, follower of the late cult leader and murderer Charles Manson, has been released. She has served 53 years of her life sentence.

Van Houten, now in his seventies, is conditionally free. Earlier attempts to get an early release failed, as she was still seen as a danger to society.

Van Houten was the youngest supporter of the notorious cult leader Charles Manson. She was 19 years old when she took part in a murder spree on his behalf in 1969. She wasn’t there when members of the Manson Family murdered pregnant actress Sharon Tate and four others, but she was there when businessman Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary were murdered in a Los Angeles residential area.

During a hearing on the case, Van Houten described holding Rosemary LaBianca as another stabbed her. She later stabbed the woman herself.

The Manson follower spent years in a California prison. According to her lawyer, she is now staying in temporary accommodation.
