The prosecution will request their permanent detention

The Dobrich District Prosecutor’s Office will bring charges against the captain of the cargo ship stranded off the coast of Kamen Bryag, as well as his second assistant, a captain who was on watch the night of the incident. The two will be charged with allowing the vessel to get stuck, causing significant damage to someone else’s property and endangering the life of another, the state prosecution said. For such a crime, the law provides for a sentence of 5 to 15 years’ imprisonment.

By a decree of the supervising prosecutor, the two are in custody for up to 72 hours. A request for their permanent detention is pending in court.

The prosecutor’s office will still check whether there is pollution of the sea water and damage to nature. The actions of the state bodies will also be investigated – whether they were adequate, timely and correct. It will also be checked whether there is inaction on the part of officials, which could lead to an ecological catastrophe in the Yailata area and the region.

Today, a team of investigators questioned all members of the ship’s crew before judges from the Dobrich District Court. Ship documentation and navigation charts have been seized, and a customs inspection of the entire crew is to take place tomorrow.

At the same time, a signal has been received from the Ministry of Environment and Water, which will be attached to the materials collected so far.

By order of the Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev, the investigation of the case was assigned to a team of investigators from the National Investigation Service.

Against this background, a Bulgarian crew is expected to board the ship. However, this will only happen when weather conditions allow it. At this stage the ship is well fortified, the Maritime Administration is adamant. For now, the ship is left without a crew and without electricity.
