PEACE – Ex president Bolivia Jeanine Anez attempted suicide in prison after prosecutors charged her with genocide over the deaths of protesters in 2019.

The suicide attempt took place on Saturday last week local time. The prison said Anez is now in stable condition after the suicide attempt.

“We can say, without a doubt, that his health is stable,” the director of prisons, Juan Carlos Limpias, told reporters on Sunday.

“Currently, he is with his family in the correctional facility. Family will be an important factor to help improve his state of mind,” said Limpias, who was quoted as saying Al Jazeera, Monday (23/8/2021).

Carolina Ribera, Anez’s daughter, said her mother made a suicide attempt on Saturday because of “severe depression” due to her prolonged detention.

Norma Cueller, Anez’s attorney, said Anez had injured herself by slicing her forearm. “This is a call for help from the former president. He felt very harassed,” the lawyer told reporters.

Anez, 54, was arrested earlier this year on charges that he participated in the coup to topple former President Evo Morales in 2019.

He has denied the allegations and said he was a victim of political persecution. He is in prison awaiting trial.
