The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has fined Glasgow’s Celtic and Aberdeen a fine of £ 8,000 (€ 8.7k) for breaches of coronavirus protocols.
Following disciplinary proceedings, the two clubs received a total fine of £ 30,000 (€ 41,400), but most of the fine has been suspended and will only be used if there are any further offenses.
Eight Aberdeen players were instructed to self-isolate after having fun outside the team’s home, and two more were found to test positive for Covid-19.
Celtic player Boli Bolingoli, meanwhile, played a match against Kilmarnock without complying with quarantine conditions after returning from Spain.
All of these players were subject to disciplinary action by the Scottish Football Association (SFA), but the league also launched separate proceedings against the two clubs, with a total of five matches postponed as a result of the offenses.
A spokesman for the SPFL said both clubs had provided “substantial evidence of mitigation”.
He added that the Aberdeen and Celtic clubs have done a great deal to ensure that their players comply with all relevant requirements and protocols relating to Covid-19 ″.
“However, requiring players to follow their clubs’ carefully designed protocols is the personal and professional responsibility of these players,” said an SPFL spokesman.
The fines will be paid to the league charity SPFL Trust.
Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormac said “it is a fair result that shows a common sense approach”.
“The SPFL has recognized the tremendous effort we have put into developing and adhering to health maintenance procedures and protocols,” he explained.
At a previous meeting, the SFA disqualified Bolingoli for three games, and Celtic leased him to Turkish champion Istanbul’s Bashaksehir.
Eight Aberdeen players were temporarily disqualified.
All nine players were also fined by their clubs.
