Celebrated at a restaurant: – Eight in hospital after champagne poisoning

On Sunday night, a major rescue operation took place at a restaurant in the center of Weiden in Germany.

A group of friends of eight people collapsed after sharing a bottle of champagne.

When the police and emergency services arrived at the restaurant, some of the injured were found lying on the floor.

Andrea Meier, a spokesman for the Oberpfalz police, tells the German TV news program RTL News that several of the people had symptoms of poisoning.

Found drugs

In a press release The police write that all eight were given medical treatment and taken to various hospitals.

During the night, one of them, a 52-year-old man, died. The remaining seven are still receiving medical treatment.

Senior State Attorney Gerd Schäfer tells the German daily newspaper Allgäu newspaper that traces of ecstasy were found in the champagne bottleIt is still unknown how the drug ended up there.

According to Lommelegen Ecstasy is a cocktail of several hallucinogens and central nervous system stimulants where MDMA tends to be the main ingredient.

Complained about the taste

The German daily newspaper writes that the guests in the restaurant should have immediately complained about the taste of the champagne.

Although ecstasy was found in the bottle, investigators do not believe any of the eight had the entire substance in it.

Investigators are now focusing on the origin of the champagne bottle and have ruled out a targeted attack. According to Schäfer, the producer of the champagne has not yet been contacted, but the person or persons who did this may be charged with negligent homicide.

– The bottle has been carefully examined. It will be investigated whether the bottle was tampered with or not. It would be entirely possible to open a bottle, pour in the substances and seal the bottle again in a way that would not be noticed, says Schäfer.

On Facebook writes the restaurant incident happened at, LaVita, that they now keep closed.

– We have no well-founded information ourselves. Ambulance personnel and police were quickly on the scene and tried their best. Our thoughts go to those affected and their families.

No danger to life

One of the seven survivors has been discharged from the hospital, while the rest are still hospitalized.

– But there is no danger to life. In the meantime, one person has been discharged, says Meier.
