UEFA’s chairman Aleksander Ceferin would consider it unfair if Liverpool do not become Premier League champions this season. He wants to prevent the ‘Reds’ from missing the title if the season is unexpectedly stopped by the corona crisis.
“If there is still playable this season, they will almost certainly be champions. And if there is no more playable, there would still be somehow another champion to be designated,” Ceferin told the Slovenian newspaper on Monday Epika.
“I don’t see any way that Liverpool could not finish this season without a title. I understand that fans will be disappointed if it happens in an empty stadium or even in front of the drawing board, but I think they will be champions anyway.”
Liverpool needed two more wins for the first championship since 1990 before the Premier League was shut down due to the corona virus outbreak. The team of manager Jürgen Klopp has a 25-point lead over closest pursuer Manchester City.
“Don’t endanger anyone with football”
UEFA wants all competitions in Europe to be completed where possible. The European Football Association gave the national associations permission to extend the season, which normally ends before June 30, to July, August or possibly even September.
“It will all depend on safety. We shouldn’t endanger anyone with football,” said Ceferin, who said he was much milder than last week when he threatened countries to take European tickets if they would already put an end to the season.
UEFA will consult with all national associations again in mid-April and will then discuss the player contracts, among other things. Many players have a contract until July 1 with their club and that will have to be automatically extended if the season lasts longer.
