The Rise and Fall of Julian Draxler: From German National Player to Al-Ahli SC in Qatar

Once seen as a great hope for the future Schalke 04 celebrated, things have now become very quiet around Julian Draxler. Where does the former play? German national players Today?

153 Bundesliga appearances for Schalke 04 and VfL Wolfsburg, 58 international matches for the DFB-Elf and a third place in the 2013 Golden Boy election. Julian Draxler was once considered one of Germany’s greatest young hopes, but the attacking midfielder’s career turned out differently than expected .

At the age of 17, Draxler made the leap from Schalke’s youth team to the professionals, a year later he became a German senior national player and in 2014, at just 20 years old, he became world champion in Brazil. A career start straight out of a picture book.

In 2015 he made a surprise move to VfL Wolfsburg before moving to France to PSG in 2017 for 36 million euros. There he became French champion four times and cup winner four times. But instead of a world career, Draxler loses more momentum every year and finds himself more and more often on the bench or in the stands. Injuries also keep setting him back.

PSG’s arms race didn’t make the situation any easier for Draxler. Suddenly he had to duel with players like Mbappe, Neymar or Messi. After he was initially a regular player, his stock at the top French club continued to decline.

A loan to the traditional Portuguese club Benfica Lisbon and coach Roger Schmidt was intended to give his career new impetus, but the hoped-for effect did not materialize. Although Draxler also becomes champion in Portugal, he doesn’t really play a big role. Draxler only played ten games in the Portuguese league.

Last summer, Draxler returned to Paris after his loan from Benfica expired and moved to Al-Ahli SC in Qatar in September. Draxler appeared there three times in the Qatar Stars League, scoring two goals and two assists. Draxler would like to prove it to himself again there.

It is uncertain whether the path will ever lead back to the Bundesliga. It also raises the question of whether the career of a top talent was left unfinished or whether Draxler was never the great talent he was portrayed as. However, looking back at the beginning of his career, one can probably conclude that Draxler’s name could have shone even brighter in the European football firmament.
