CD Mirandés humiliates Sevilla by De Jong, cup fairy tale continues

The cup fairy tale of CD Mirandés in the Copa del Rey continues. The team, normally active on the second level of Spain, has caused a resounding surprise by eliminating Luuk de Jong’s Sevilla. The humiliation for Seville only stopped at the 3-1 score.

Sevilla started the game dramatically and was already 1-0 behind after seven minutes of play. Matheus Aias, the striker of Mirandés, gave his team the lead. He turned pretty free in the penalty area and shot the ball past a hopeless Sevilla-keeper Tomás Vaclík.

It was no sign for Seville to add a little extra. After half an hour of play, it was again Aias who struck. Sloppy ball loss in Seville’s own half was relentlessly punished by the striker, who left Vaclík without a chance when the direction was changed.

It was a complete off-day for Sevilla, where De Jong played the entire game but could not impress for a moment. Ten minutes after the break, Mirandés even had the chance to make it 3-0, but Álvaro Pena missed a penalty. Five minutes before the end, the home team decided the game. Álvaro Rey thrilled the supporters by making the 3-0.

Nolito managed to save the honor somewhat for Seville. The attacker shot the 3-1 in the injury time of the match. It means that Mirandés’ cup fairy tale remains alive. The team of coach Andoni Iraola can prepare for the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey.
