A 3.5-ounce serving of cooked shrimp contains 189 milligrams of cholesterol. In comparison, an equal-sized serving of salmon contains about 62 milligrams of cholesterol.

Although shrimp and other shellfish contain relatively high levels of cholesterol, this seafood is low in fat and very low in saturated fat. These foods also contain minerals such as selenium, iodine and zinc.

Dietary cholesterol has far less effect on blood cholesterol levels than the amount of saturated fat you eat. If your doctor recommends changing your diet to lower your cholesterol, the most important thing to do is to cut down on saturated fat.
