Carhaix hospital at the forefront of colon cancer screening – Carhaix

“In Carhaix, Santa Claus arrives in November and has a beautiful name, the coast”, launches Christian Troadec this Saturday November 26 in front of the thirty people, doctors, elected officials, volunteers of the League against cancer, gathered in the hall of the town council. La Littorale is this Plougonvelin association, which has been organizing cultural and sporting events since 2013, notably a large gathering (excursions, marches, races) in June to raise funds, the profits of which are donated to the Brest CHRU.

“Fairness between Carhaix and Brest”

In 2022 it undertook with the Finistère Cancer League to equip the hepato-gastroenterology departments of the Brest and Carhaix hospitals with an innovative Cadeye artificial intelligence module, through the payment of aid starting from 50,000 euros. An opportunity for Christian Troadec to thank this “Santa Claus”, in this case Gérard Bergot, the president of the Littoral, who is none other than the father of the municipal councilor Bertrand Bergot, for having allowed “this equality between the two establishments. Before to add: “Let’s not forget that health depends on the state and we demand the same rights in terms of resources as other territories”.

After the screening of a short film retracing the actions of the Littoral, Gérard Bergot humorously encouraged the public to “be positive”. “Even small associations can do great things. We are very proud to have taken up the challenge of funding these two modules”. The president of the Plougonvélinoisse association did not fail to associate the doctors with this success. “Without their will, we wouldn’t be here. They could have chosen to stay in their comfort zone.”

“A First Time in the Great West”

For their part, gastroenterologists are not hiding their satisfaction with this new technology. “It will be a first for the Great West,” Dr. Arnachellum rejoices. The head of the hepato-gastroenterology department of the Carhaix hospital points out that “colon cancer is cured nine times out of ten if diagnosed early”.

Artificial intelligence can help detect polyps and predict their nature.

“This system allows during a colonoscopic examination to increase the detection rate of polyps by 10% and to identify those who are at risk of cancer,” indicates Dr. Michel Robaszkiewicz. “The stakes are even higher in the Carhaix basin, where the rate of participation in colorectal cancer screening campaigns is lower than elsewhere in Brittany. This new tool helps to ensure equal access to treatment regardless of the place of residence”, continues the president of the departmental committee of the League against tumors.

“In service since this Wednesday”

“The artificial intelligence module will be operational from this Wednesday November 30,” said, among other things, the head of the hepato-gastroenterology department of the Carhaix hospital where about 1,800 colonoscopies are performed every year. A service in which four practitioners take turns. A service which, underlines Dr. Arnachellum, “undertakes to receive any patient with a positive screening test within ten days and to submit him to a colonoscopy in the following month”.
