Care personnel Breda wants to stop controversial Oranjefeest 538 and start petition | NOW

Doctors and healthcare staff from the Amphia Hospital in Breda have started a petition against the big Orange party of Radio 538 that takes place in the city on April 24. Ten thousand people are present. They call this a slap in the face of healthcare, which has been working overtime for more than a year due to the corona crisis.

Within three hours, more than 20,000 people have already had the petition Signed ‘With 538 Disdain for Care’.

The “concerned caregivers, patients on the growing waiting lists, their loved ones and others” argue that “this ill-considered pseudo-experiment” should be called off.

Ten thousand people are allowed to attend the Fieldlab experiment of the music channel on April 24 in Breda. The initiators of the petition do not understand this at all. “Celebrating a party with 10,000 people 400 meters from a hospital overloaded by COVID is a blow to patients and caregivers,” they write.

Regular care has been scaled back, doctors are working overtime

Due to the corona pandemic, the hospital has reduced its operating capacity by at least half and the operating rooms are only available for acute and urgent care. Doctors assess daily whether surgery is really necessary or can be postponed. An Amphia spokesperson said earlier that he was concerned about the party, because the use of drugs or alcohol can lead to acute medical situations.

The OMT also expressed concerns about the Orange Party earlier this week. OMT member and epidemiologist Jan Kluytmans is concerned about the possible infections caused by the large number of visitors.

“I think ten thousand people is a very big step. Testing will give you a lot of positives, but not all of them, there will be dozens of people who are contagious,” said Kluytmans. BNR. “I am concerned about that anyway. From the control perspective, I think that is risky.”

Catering entrepreneurs in Breda are also angry

The enthusiasm for the tickets for the event was enormous: more than one million people tried to get a ticket. The cards were distributed by draw.

The event takes place at the Chasséveld in Breda. Hospitality entrepreneurs in the city reacted furiously to the test event. They felt insulted that a major event is allowed in the city, while they have not been allowed to receive guests for months due to the corona measures.

Radio 538 and the Breda catering industry will soon discuss how they can work together. On Monday there will be an extra meeting in which the Breda mayor Paul Depla has to give a text and explanation to the city council about the event.
