Car scrapping bonus: times are tightening, but with some news

Car scrapping on the launch pad. New incentives to relaunch the automotive sector, one of the hardest hit by the Covid-19 emergency, will soon begin.

Italy is one of the most affected EU countries with a collapse in extraordinary car registrations: in April it was 97.5% compared to the same period last year with sensational drops for all car manufacturers. And the data for May and June, despite a timid recovery, will certainly not be encouraging.

Scrap car closer

This is why an incentive is needed from the government to restart purchases. On a political level, the majority forces – as reported by press sources – have found the square on the scrapping of cars to come. The agreement between the Pd-Italy Viva-Leu axis, which had proposed an amendment to the relaunch decree to introduce a bonus up to 4 thousand euros for the purchase of 6 euro cars, and the Cinquestelle component, so far opposed to the measure, would have been found and formalized in a reformulation of the text at first signature of the Pd Gianluca Benamati. The goal was achieved thanks to the provision of more generous incentives than the current ones for electric cars and less polluting hybrids, dear to the M5s, limiting those for Euro 6 cars a little lower.

Bonuses for electric, hybrid and euro 6 cars

Specifically, if in the original version of the amendment, an incentive of € 4 thousand in total was foreseen for € 6 (2 thousand from the state coffers and the same as a dealer discount), now the threshold could drop to € 3,500, with the state part of the incentive at 1,500 euros instead of 2 thousand. For the purchase of a car without contextual scrapping, it would go from 2 thousand euros in bonuses (50% from public finance and 50% from the sales networks) to 1,750 euros, with a few hundred euros for the state incentive.

The savings thus obtained should be used to fatten the incentive already existing for the purchase of an electric car (maximum 6 thousand euros) or plug-in hybrid (maximum 4 thousand euros). Overall, around € 400 million would be needed to cover the measure for 2020 and this is where the dossier has stopped for now – some newspapers report.-
