A motorist was stranded at a traffic light in Emmen early this morning. The car hit the pole at the intersection of Hondsrugweg and Weerdingestraat.
The driver and at least one other passenger then fled, as bystanders saw. “I heard a loud bang, then a lot of screaming and saw people running away quickly,” a press photographer captured from a local resident, who was woken up by the commotion.
It is unclear how the driver left the road and was subsequently unable to avoid the traffic obstacle. As far as we know, the passengers who took the wrong path have not yet been found.
The front of the car was crumpled due to the impact, and was therefore towed away by a recovery company. Municipality employees will put the traffic light, which is hanging crookedly, back upright.
