The cantonal police of Bern identified the presumed mother of the newborn found Saturday in critical condition in Darstätten. During an initial interrogation, the woman admitted having abandoned her little girl, wrapped in a blanket and lying in a box.
The mother said she had deliberately chosen a popular place in the hope that the baby would be found quickly, the cantonal police said in a statement on Sunday. The woman, who lives in the region, gave birth to him without anyone’s help, not far from where he was found.
The girl was found around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday by an individual in a workshop accessible to the public. On Sunday, she was still in the hospital, where she continued to receive treatment. Police said on Saturday that the child had been found in a state of hypothermia and helicoptered to the hospital in critical condition.
