The Canadian government will provide Ukraine with a $120 million loan. Terms and conditions are agreed upon.

Canada plans to provide Ukraine with a $120 million loan to support economic resilience and development, the Canadian government announced on Friday, January 21.

Canada also offered to provide a technical assistance grant of up to $6 million to support the implementation of the loan.

It is noted that the terms of the loan and the timing of its implementation are being negotiated.

“Ukrainians can always count on Canada to be there when needed. Working together, we can strengthen the economy and help advance governance reforms. I have authorized this proposed loan to support Ukraine’s ability to respond to the needs of its population in the face of Russia’s aggressive actions . This is just one step in building a secure future for Ukrainians, and I will continue to look for ways to support Ukraine,” said Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister for International Development and Minister in Charge of Canada’s Pacific Economic Development Agency.

The decision on the loan was welcomed by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.

“I welcome Canada’s decision to allocate $120 million in assistance to Ukraine. A strong Ukraine is the key to the security of Europe. Canada once again demonstrates its commitment to the spirit of a special partnership between our countries,” he wrote in Twitter.

Recall that this weekForeign Minister of Canada visited Ukraine Melanie Joly. She held a number of meetings with the leadership of the country and, in particular, stated that Canada took note Ukraine’s requests for weapons and is currently discussing this request.
