Canada frees son of Huawei founder after US withdraws allegations

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Government Canada decided to let go of the son of the founder of Huawei, Meng Wanzhou, after binding agreements with the governments of China and the United States.

In exchange, the Chinese government also released two Canadian citizens, namely Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, who had been detained since December 2018 on suspicion of spying.

As reported ReutersMeng, who is the son of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, reportedly flew to China immediately after being released by the Canadian government under house arrest. The agreement came after the United States District Court Judge, Ann Donnelly, decided to drop all charges against him.

As a result, a judge in a Canadian court ruled that Meng should be released immediately because the US dropped all charges. The judge also revoked Meng’s conditional release on bail after three years under house arrest.

On the other hand, Spavor who is a businessman and Kovrig who is a former diplomat returned to their home countries after both were released by the Chinese government for a thousand days.

In a speech ahead of her departure for China, Meng said she was grateful for the judge’s decision. He said the case had a big impact on his life.

Meng was detained in 2018 by Canadian security forces at the request of the United States. He is accused of not giving honest information to HSBC in a project to sell electronic devices between Huawei and Iran’s largest mobile phone operator in 2010.

While carrying out a contract with an Iranian company, Meng became a senior official at the Skycom company registered in Hong Kong.

The US government blacklisted Huawei in 2019 on the grounds that the company’s electronic devices could be used to spy on and retrieve data. In addition, since 2018 the US has still imposed sanctions and embargoes on Iran due to its nuclear program which is accused of leading to the manufacture of weapons and its involvement in conflicts in a number of countries in the Middle East.

China considers the case brought against Meng by the US administration under President Donald Trump for political reasons.

Meng’s case has also made relations between the US and China heat up in addition to the trade war and the Covid-19 polemic.
