NEW YORK CITY, KOMPAS.com – Vice Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representatives of the House of Representatives from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Faction Abdul Kharis Almasyhari, asked UN peacekeepers plunge to mediate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza.
“Indonesia can send a memorandum of protest to the UN as a member of the UN and also as a non-permanent member of the Security Council with a majority of Muslims, we ask the UN to protect the Palestinian people,” said Abdul in his statement, Tuesday (11/5/2021).
“If necessary, the UN will send peacekeeping troops there because the UN resolution allows the Zionist efforts to kill the Palestinian people not to emerge again.”
“I as the Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representatives condemn the barbarism, Israeli atrocities against the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank as well as the desecration of the sanctity of the month of Ramadan and the Al Aqsa Mosque, the first qibla of Muslims,” he continued.
So, can UN peacekeepers go directly to Gaza? It turned out that the process was not that easy.
According to the official website of the UN peacekeeping force, it takes a lot of time to deploy and they are often asked why they are not leaving reserve soldiers in conflict areas.
“The Security Council will say how many military personnel are needed, and the UN Headquarters will work closely with member states to identify personnel and deploy them,” said a statement on the website.

The process of deploying UN peacekeepers can take a very long time, it could be more than six months from the date of resolution to prepare equipment.
Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan once analogized that the UN was the only brigade in the world that had to wait for the fire to go out before it could start a fire engine.
Reservists stationed in conflict areas was a logical idea, but it would be very costly if several thousand personnel were on permanent alert.
On the other hand, it is much more practical to deploy UN peacekeepers after obtaining permission, which is also useful for selecting personnel with the background, training and language skills according to deployment in conflict areas.

The system was set up in 2015 by the United Nations with member states to provide special units for peacekeeping forces.
The UN Secretariat will conduct an assessment of the readiness of the personnel, training and equipment of these units.
Selected units can also be sworn in to the PCRS Rapid Deployment Rate and will be available within 60 days following a request from the UN Secretary General.
Fully operational in early 2018, this system helped reduce the timetable for deploying military forces for the start of peace missions.

The Indonesian government was asked to raise funds for assistance
Apart from asking UN peacekeepers to deploy to Gaza, Abdul Kharis Almasyhari also asked the government to raise funds for aid to ease the burden on victims of Israeli attacks.
The PKS politician also appealed to the Indonesian people to provide material and spiritual assistance to victims of this Israeli attack through official institutions.
“Apart from the constitutional mandate to fight for Palestinian independence, it is necessary to take joint steps to build solidarity and as the Indonesian people we must help alleviate and with all our efforts to help the Palestinian people,” he concluded.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict happened over the years. The latest attacks have occurred since Friday (7/5/2021) when the Al Aqsa Mosque was attacked, injuring 200 people.
