Peter Ian Limas, a gastroenterologist-subspecialist in digestive surgery at Pondok Indah Hospital in Pondok Indah, said the cost of bariatric surgery depends on the patient’s condition.
“This is also seen from the technique, do you need other tools? With ultrasound, it also costs more. The cost is a bit difficult, yes, it can be around Rp. 60-200 million,” said Peter in a limited interview with RSPI Group last weekend.

Peter said the appendage ‘fast’, ‘in a short time’, is not appropriate when used in surgery, including digestive surgery. Surgeons are not chasing speed at achieving targets but pursuing lifestyle changes.
In the world of dieting, there are programs to lose weight in a short time. However, once the diet is difficult to become a habit, problems arise, then the weight goes up to extremes beyond the initial weight.
“We want that long lasting, settled, gradual. So extreme words, short time, are not suitable for bariatric surgery,” he added.
When the bariatric surgery costs Rp. 60 million, for example, the patient’s journey does not stop at the operating table.
Modification of the digestive system makes it easy to lose hunger. Usually 2-3 mouthfuls of food are enough to make the stomach feel full. Therefore, usually after surgery, the patient will continue to be accompanied for at least a year.
Food intake is not in the form of biscuits, rice, let alone fried potatoes. Patients will be encouraged to increase protein intake. Why?
“Protein cannot be provided by the body. This is so that the body gets energy or calories from fat. So it changes over time. The body will know that it is not given carbohydrates, so take it from fat,” he explained.
Then, even if you can afford the cost of bariatric surgery, the doctor will not necessarily perform the operation. Bariatric surgery must meet several requirements.
Peter said bariatric surgery will be applied to patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 and above, without diabetes, hypertension or hypercholesterolemia. The patient has also tried various diet programs but to no avail.
“If you already have diabetes [atau penyakit lain]BMI 30 is also an indication for surgery,” he added.
