Can Diabetes Really Cause Stroke? See Doctor’s Explanation Page all

KOMPAS.com Diabetes is said to be the cause of a number of other dangerous diseases, one of which is stroke.

Responding to these rumors, the staff of the Endocrine, Metabolic, and Diabetes Division of the Department of Internal Medicine, RSCM-FKUI, dr Syahidatul Wafa, Sp.PD said that diabetes can indeed trigger stroke.

“So it’s true, the fact that diabetes is the mother of all diseases,” said Dr. Wafa in a virtual briefing at the BeatDiabetes Online Festival 2022 Tropicana Slim, Thursday (7/4/2022).

Wafa explained, diabetes is called the mother of all diseases, not without reason. Diabetes it can trigger serious complications in the sufferer’s body, both curable and incurable.

Some complications of disease that can arise due to diabetes are stroke, kidney failure, nerve damage, gum and mouth disorders, and many others.

Diabetes can cause stroke because of high blood sugar in the body which causes disruption and even damage to blood vessels.

“So it’s not only related to sugar, diabetes will also cause blood vessel disorders, and blood flow,” said Wafa.

Disturbance or damage to blood vessels and blood flow can cause various disturbances to other organs in the body.

As is known, blood vessels function to drain blood from the heart throughout the body and transport blood from all over the body back to the heart.

Disturbance or damage to blood vessels can cause atherosclerosis, hematoma, bleeding in the eye (subconjunctiva), ruptured blood vessels in the brain, varicose veins, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and even dental and mouth problems.

That way, diabetes can indeed trigger a stroke, especially if the blood sugar levels in the sufferer’s body are not well controlled.

According to data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the American Diabetes Association (ADA), and the Indonesian Endocrinology Association (Perkeni), a diagnosis of diabetes can be made if the fasting blood sugar level is above 126 mg per dL and when two hours after eating it is above 200 mg per dL.

Excessively high blood sugar levels in the blood can cause blockages due to the accumulation of clots and accumulations of fat (plaque) in the blood vessels.

If the blood vessels are blocked, the supply of oxygen and blood to the brain will be disrupted, resulting in a stroke, a condition caused by damage to the blood vessels in the brain.

The risk of stroke will increase if the patient is over 50 years old, has a smoking habit, rarely does exercise, is obese, has a habit of consuming alcoholic beverages, has a history of heart disease, and hypertension.
