BYD Beats Tesla in Electric Car Sales for Second Year – Expands to Indonesia in 2024

For the second time in a row, an electric car manufacturer from China, BYD, beating Tesla in worldwide electric car sales figures. BYD is king when it comes to producing and selling environmentally friendly cars.

In its latest statement, BYD claims to have sold three million units of electric cars worldwide throughout 2023. This figure is far behind Tesla, which in its year-end report said it had succeeded in selling 1.8 million electric cars under the sky.

This is the second time in a row that Tesla has lost to BYD when it comes to worldwide sales figures. As quoted from CNBC.

Please note, the Tesla sales figures above only include full BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles) cars. The company owned by Elon Musk only produces and sells fully electric cars.

Meanwhile BYD’s sales figures also include BEV cars and hybrid cars. It is stated that BYD has sold 1.6 million full BEV cars, while another 1.4 million are hybrid cars.

Despite reaching three million electric car units, BYD failed to meet its target of selling 3.05 million vehicles as targeted. The number of cars they sold was ‘only’ 3.02 million.

BYD Enters Indonesia in 2024

Being the number one electric vehicle manufacturer in the world, BYD continues to expand its production and sales wings. Including Indonesia, where this year they target to start selling their products.

BYD is actually not a new name on the commercial vehicle scene in Indonesia. In recent years, they have been roaming the streets of Jakarta by providing electric vehicles for public transportation fleets such as Bluebird electric taxis and TransJakarta electric buses.

However, in 2024, BYD will sell electric cars to retail consumers. BYD will announce its business plan in the first half of this year.

“For the Indonesian market, we will continue to bring the best competitive products from the automotive industry. Of course, taxis and city buses have already started. Not just sales, BYD has also shown interest in building a factory in Indonesia. However, they are still waiting for policies from the Indonesian Government before deciding to take steps to invest.

“After the product was launched, some of the points you mentioned such as local manufacturing, new energy solutions, and even a rail transit system we are also seriously considering from now on,” said Liu.

“It is difficult for us to create universal standards to meet the demands of all countries. But today here we are confident to show our intentions regarding the possibility of local manufacturing in Indonesia,” said Liu.
