Burning pillow creates smoke in the children’s ward of Franciscus Gasthuis

In the night from Wednesday to Thursday, quite a few emergency services were dispatched to the Franciscus Gasthuis in Rotterdam. A pillow was on fire, releasing smoke on the ninth floor of the hospital.

The pillow caught fire in the children’s ward of the Franciscus Gasthuis. No one was injured. “That is also because the staff acted quickly,” says the spokesperson for the Security Region. The children of the department have been transferred to another wing of the hospital, to the gynaecology department.

To be sure, the eighth and tenth floors of the Franciscus Gasthuis were also examined.

Due to the complexity of the incident, the emergency services scaled up to ‘major fire’. Just after 3:30 a.m., all departments were released by the fire brigade. The parents are informed by the nurses.

It is not yet clear how the pillow caught fire. The fire service is investigating whether the cause is due to incorrect use of hospital equipment.
