3 p.m.: The party’s candidate is relaxed

“I’m on my way to the polling station right now,” reports Hajo Sommers, direct candidate for The Party, to the “WAZ“. And further: “That was maybe my first election campaign, but certainly not my last.” He rates the last few months positively: “But we did well for a small sausage party like us.”

1:34 p.m.: Turnout in NRW is very high until noon

State Returning Officer Wolfgang Schellen announced at noon that by 12 noon the turnout in eight selected districts and independent cities in North Rhine-Westphalia averaged just under 45 percent. The random surveys were carried out in the Düren district, in the Rhine district of Neuss and in the Gütersloh district as well as in the independent cities of Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Essen, Cologne and Mülheim an der Ruhr. In the 2017 federal election, the turnout at the same time was around 40 percent.

11.22 a.m.: CDU direct candidate is optimistic

“I’m optimistic, it’s like the Berlin Marathon: the last stage decides – and here Armin Laschet has proven in the past that he can do it,” says Marie-Luise Dött, the CDU direct candidate for constituency 117 ( Oberhausen Dinslaken), on Sunday opposite the “WAZ“. She hopes to get the majority in her constituency. “That would be awesome, though, because it is an ancestral SPD stronghold,” said Dött. If she doesn’t get the direct mandate, her entry into the Bundestag will be tight.

8.45 a.m.: Polling stations open! YOU influence the first 6 p.m. forecast

The 60,000 polling stations in Germany have been open since eight o’clock. Around 60.4 million people are called upon to cast their votes in the Bundestag election – 2.8 million of them are first-time voters.

It is expected that this year more people than ever before will cast their votes by postal vote – according to the federal election committee, at least 40 percent of the voters.

But the high number of postal voters is becoming a real problem, because, for example, older people in particular use postal voting more often than average and people over the age of 60 vote differently than those who go to the polling station. The Union and the SPD traditionally achieve better results with senior citizens than with younger ones. Because of this, the post-election surveys at the polling stations could distort the actual mood that emerges later when the votes are counted. You can find out more about this in our Bundestag election news blog.

September 25, 2021: New record for postal votes in Oberhausen

The polling stations in Oberhausen are likely to be much less busy on election Sunday than usual. As the city announced, over 41,000 applications for postal votes have been received. A new record!

Bundestag elections in Oberhausen and Dinslaken: an SPD stronghold since 1965

The Bundestag constituency Oberhausen, to which the city of Dinslaken from the Wesel district has also belonged since 2002 and has been called Oberhausen-Wesel III (constituency 117) since then, is considered a safe SPD stronghold.

It has been in the hands of the SPD without interruption since 1965. The former mayor of Oberhausen, Luise Albertz, was able to win him over to the Social Democrats. The later state minister and NRW-SPD chairman Michael Groschek once won the electoral district in 2009. Dirk Vöpel has represented Oberhausen and Dinslaken in the Bundestag since 2013.
