Building permit more expensive in the Netherlands, price doubled in Kerkrade and Leiden | NOW

Buyers of new-build homes are paying more and more for a building permit, it appears on Saturday research of Vereniging Eigen Huis (VEH). The costs for the so-called construction fee in 2020 are on average 2.4 percent higher than last year. In some municipalities the costs have more than doubled.

Kerkrade is one of the municipalities with the largest cost increases, with more than a doubling of 150 percent. Where an average construction lodge for a new-build home had to cost 3,316 euros last year, this was 8,269 euros this year. The building lodges in Leiden also shot up, from 3,548 in 2019 to 7,640 this year, an increase of 115 percent.

However, the two municipalities are not the most expensive: that dubious honor goes to Terschelling, where a building permit for a new-build home costs 11,946 euros, 94 percent more than last year. The Wadden Island thus succeeds the municipality of Voorschoten, which was the most expensive last year. This year, the building lodges in that municipality fell by 29 percent from almost 12,000 euros to 8,840 euros.

People who do not want to spend a lot of money for a building permit for a new-build home, should go to the municipality of The Hague. This is where the average price for a construction lodge is lowest at 2,057.

The large price differences per municipality are bad news, says VEH director Cindy van de Velde in a response. “The same new-build home is therefore many thousands of euros more expensive in one municipality than in another. We really shouldn’t want that”, says Van de Velde.
