Brussels bans European right-wing events, to Meloni’s dismay. Orbán and Farage: “Communists”

Brussels municipal authorities banned – and interrupted – an event bringing together several European representatives of right-wing movements. The police prevented the “National Conservatism Conference” (NatCon) from taking place by order of the socialist mayor of the Brussels municipality of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, where the event was supposed to take place, to avoid the risk of “public disorder “.

“We are really in the register of old-style communism, basically if you don’t agree with me you should be banned,” he criticized Nigel Farage, champion of Brexit. The Briton was among the speakers of the morning, when the Brussels police notified the NatCon organizers of the ban due to the risk of disturbing public order.

“What is happening in Brussels leaves us in disbelief and dismay. I immediately asked Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo to follow what was happening and I thank him for his timely and clear stance against the hateful oppression of freedom of expression”. So does the prime minister Giorgia Melonias president of the Conservative and Reformist party.

“I have issued an ordinance to ban the event of the National Conference of Conservatism to ensure public safety. In Etterbeek, Brussels and Saint-Josse, the far right is not welcome,” the mayor of Saint wrote on -Josse-ten-Noode, the socialist Ordered. The mayor assured that he had taken this decision in agreement with the police headquarters in the area and the Belgian Threat Analysis Coordination Body (Ocam).

The event hall in question was the third place where the organizers of the conference had attempted to hold it, after having been denied access to the Concert Noble space, in the European quarter, and to the Sofitel also close to the headquarters of the EU institutions. The conference brought together figures from the European ultra-conservatism and far right, such as the Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán; the former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki; Hermann Tertsch, Spanish MEP from Vox; the British politician Nigel Farage and the former British Home Secretary, Suella Braverman.

The decision sparked the ire of the representatives of the parties involved (delegates from the Brothers of Italy and the League also participated in the event).

“Municipal autonomy is a cornerstone of our democracy but it can never prevail over the Belgian Constitution, which has guaranteed freedom of expression and peaceful assembly since 1830. Banning political meetings is unconstitutional”, condemned the Belgian prime minister, Alexander De Croo.

Around 3.30pm Eric Zemmour, leader of Reconquete and candidate for the Elysée, found the entrance to the event blocked by a police cordon. He left defining Europe and Brussels as “gravediggers” of freedom of expression.

Police could remain on site until tomorrow to prevent any access to the building, and organizers have not ruled out that the conference could continue elsewhere for its second day.

“The last time they wanted to silence me by sending the police was in 1988 with the communists,” Orbán wrote on X.
