It is suspected that the recent news about drownings, especially by mice, and also the drama this year at Scheveningen in which five surfers died at the same time, play a role, even if that cannot be stated with certainty.
The Rescue Brigade, however, sees the number of visits to its own website with information about the dangers of the sea increasing considerably. In addition, the number of times the brigade is called for help is lower than during the heat wave of July 2019 “while the beaches are now overcrowded.”
The Rescue Brigade counts per week. During the heat wave of last July, the brigade was asked 2,547 times for help in all kinds of situations. But Friday, for example, there were less than 240 requests, although the figures for The Hague, Katwijk and Noordwijk have not yet been received. However, it must go crazy if the daily figure is still above 300, said the spokesman. The numbers of requests for help will most likely remain below those of last year.
Busy on the beach
It will be extremely busy on the beaches along the North Sea on Saturday, and on the roads leading to it. In The Hague, traffic is deadlocked and that is why the police come with a “compelling advice / request: don’t come to Scheveningen.” All parking spaces at Zandvoort and Bloemendaal are also full and traffic is blocked, so the municipalities are also asking people to stop coming there.
