British director to make a documentary about conductor Maris Jansons The news


Riga, March 11, LETA. British director Peter Maniura will make a documentary about Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons “Mariss Jansons: the story of four orchestras”, which will reflect the life of a Latvian-born maestro through the eyes of four orchestras he led, Signe Lonerte told LETA.

By order of the international classical music festival “Riga Jurmala”, a documentary dedicated to Janson will be made, the premiere of which is planned for the beginning of 2022. The film “Mariss Jansons: The Story of Four Orchestras” will be made by television producer and director Maniura, who has previously participated in the production of the concert “Born in Riga” in Latvia.

For the first time, the story of Janson will be heard in the narration of four musicians of his orchestra. These are orchestras whose musical director or principal conductor has been Janson at some point in his life – the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

The film’s director, Maniura, emphasized that Janson was an outstanding conductor and that the new film will provide a different insight into his personality and music, revealing the relationships with the four orchestras that have played a major role in his life.

“These are orchestras of four very different cities – Oslo, Pittsburgh, Amsterdam and Munich. His large family – the musicians who played under him and the conductors who learned from him – will provide a unique and personal view of the musical and life of the genius Marisa Janson, honoring his art and heritage with new performances, “said the British director.

Lonerte said that as a tribute and honor to the conductor’s work, new recordings of these orchestras will be created for the film. In addition to the archive materials – Janson’s concert recordings and interviews, which will be prepared by Latvian Television, Norwegian public broadcaster “NRK” and other European broadcasters – there will be new interviews with orchestras, musicians and cultural figures, allowing Janson to look back on events. conductor console, both during rehearsals and at other significant moments.

Zane Čulkstēna, the director of the festival “Rīga Jūrmala”, emphasized that Jansons is considered to be one of the greatest conductors and a wonderful person of all time in the world, who turned the orchestras he worked with and influenced the lives of countless music lovers all over the world.
