The body uses energy when eating, digestion, transporting nutrients and storing nutrients. This process is called food-induced thermogenesis and can vary depending on the mealtime, as scientists from Lübeck were able to show impressively: the researchers had given 16 men a low-calorie breakfast and a high-calorie dinner for three days, and the calorie content of the meals in a second round for three turned over another day. With the same number of calories per day, the food-induced thermogenesis of the study participants after the high-calorie breakfast was up to 2.5 times higher than in the evening.
The increase in blood sugar and insulin concentration was also lower after a large breakfast compared to a sumptuous dinner. In addition, the study participants had a greater appetite for sweets during a small breakfast during the day. The study can be found in the journal “Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism”.
Better a hearty breakfast than dinner
“Our results show that a meal consumed for breakfast, regardless of the amount of calories it contains, produces twice as much food-induced thermogenesis as the same meal when consumed for dinner,” said study author Juliane Richter. She therefore recommends that overweight people eat a large breakfast instead of a large dinner in order to reduce their body weight. Normal-weighted and healthy people could also benefit from this, as this helps prevent metabolic diseases such as diabetes.
