Brazil privatizes part of its national parks (+ Photos) – Juventud Rebelde

The government of Jair Bolsonaro held, during Monday, an auction for the concession of two national parks, which will result in the private management of part of the country’s national parks, reports Telesur.

The information offered by the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment, the body in charge of the tender, specifies that it is about the Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral parks, located on the border between the southern states of Santa Catalina and Rio Grande do Sul.

Aparados da Serra contains the largest natural canyons in Latin America in its landscape.

Both units are managed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), an autonomous entity linked to the Brazilian Government’s Environment portfolio. Together, the parks cover an area of approximately 30,400 hectares.

In Aparados da Serra, there is also a very diverse natural life.

The winner of the tender, the Construcap Group, presented an initial offer for the equivalent of 3.74 million dollars for the concession of both units.

Rio Grande do Sul contains the best plant specimens in Brazil.

The concession process transfers security and maintenance services to the private sector, in exchange for the commercial exploitation of the area, which allows it to collect admission fees to the reservation area, souvenir shops, coffee shops, internal passenger transport, tours navigation on rivers, scenic helicopter flights, administration of visitor centers, trails, camping sites and viewpoints.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, in the 30-year contract, the equivalent of just over $ 47 million must be disbursed.

Hopefully this decision does not have a negative impact on the biodiversity and plant nature of these areas.
