Brazil: Commemoration of the murdered activist Marielle Franco

Rio de Janeiro. On the third anniversary of Marielle Franco’s death, events in and outside Brazil commemorated the activist. The councilor and her driver Anderson Gomes were shot dead on March 14, 2018 in Rio de Janeiro. Since then, social activists have been mobilizing to solve the murder. For example, the journalist Eliane Blum: Every day is on her Twitter channel question to read, “Who commissioned the murder of Mariel?”

As a homage to Franco, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro has a sign with your name on the public square Cinelândia right in front of the town hall on Sunday inaugurated. Next to the year of birth and death (1979 – 2018) it reads: “Black woman, from the favela, LGBT person and human rights defender. Brutally murdered on March 14, 2018 for fighting for a fairer world.”

In Buenos Aires called the collective Passarinho symbolically converted the metro station “Rio de Janeiro” into “Marielle Franco”.

Amnesty International had already inaugurated a painting by Franco on a house facade in Berlin-Kreuzberg a week earlier on International Women’s Day. On London’s Westminster Bridge next to the British Parliament, Brazilian groups called for “Justice for Marielle” on a banner that they hang from the bridge let.

The Marielle Franco Institute, founded by the family of the murdered city councilor, wants March 14th to mark the “Marielle Franco Day against Political Violence against Black Women, LGBTQIA People and Women from the Favelas” to explain. This project is part of a legislative package in line with Franco’s political work. It contains twelve bills that she herself worked on. The adoption of the package is supported by 70 MPs from 45 Brazilian cities.

In this way, the sister of the murdered woman hopes to keep Franco’s political legacy alive. The motto behind it is “Marielle is present”, a slogan that has been around the world on social media since her death.

Despite the memory of her and the enforcement of her political demands, the murder case remains impunity.

The police investigation is full of false leads and serious mistakes. The alleged murderers were caught, but they were just the henchmen in a far more complex chain of command. The criminal organization “Bureau of Crime” is said to have hired her as a contract killer. The question of who ordered Franco’s murder remains open.

One suspect is the ex-politician of the right-wing conservative Brazilian Democratic Movement (PMPB), Domingos Inácio Brazão

Although the crime has not yet been solved, the investigation and facts disclosed would have done a lot in the case. “The underground of Rio de Janeiro was revealed”, says the MP of the Party for Socialism and Freedom PSOL, Marcelo Freixo. He accompanies the investigation.
