Brahim El Mazned speaks about the late artist: “The late Ahmed Baddouj has succeeded in bringing cinema out of folklorization”

“Regional expressions fail to have the impact they deserve in the media. This requires recognition through media coverage and projects. Plural expression in our country should have a place in the media as well as in festivals. It is this plurality that makes our wealth ”.

The Covid-19 was stronger than him. Artist Ahmed Baddouj succumbed to the virus on Saturday at the age of 70. “Alas, this Covid takes immense artistic figures from us. It is very painful! ”, Exalts Brahim El Mazned, cultural actor with many hats, in a telephone exchange with ALM about the deceased. And that’s not all ! For Mr. El Mazned, the death of this artist is “an immense loss for Moroccan and Amazigh cinema. He brought a lot to the national seventh art in general and Amazigh in particular ”.

As our interlocutor specifies, the artist was an experienced actor on stage and large screens at the same time. “He was very demanding in the roles he played and the projects he supported. He even managed to bring cinema out of folklorization through solid projects. This is something quite special about Baddouj who remained in Agadir and also marked the old and current generations ”, confides our speaker. All while remembering that the deceased wanted to do a lot of projects too. As for the fame of Mr. Baddouj, during his lifetime, the cultural actor indicates: “Unfortunately, regional cultures are not highly valued in the media”. Occasionally, he evokes the Amazigh cinematographic dynamic, since the 80s, which has been enriched with several productions and limited means.

“Regional expressions fail to have the impact they deserve in the media. This requires recognition through media coverage and projects. Plural expression in our country should have a place in the media as well as in festivals. It is this plurality that makes our wealth, ”says the interlocutor.
As a reminder, the artist, born in 1950 in Mesguina in the village of Ifrkhs, was at the same time an actor, director, screenwriter and man of the theater. The deceased began his career in theater (in Arabic) in 1978, then joined the first Amazigh theater troupe “Tifawin” (lights) founded in 1985 by Lahoucine Bouizgaren.
He writes numerous scripts and numerous plays, including the most famous “Tagodi” (The grief), one of the first plays performed by the Tifawin troupe in the 1980s, and which will be adapted in 1995 on video by Ahmed Baddouj.
In 1992, he played the role of Idder in the first Amazigh film “Tamghart N’ourgh” (The woman in gold) by Lahoucine Bouizgaren.
Under the direction of another pioneer of Amazigh cinema, Mohamed Mernich, he directed several films, including “Asnnane n Tayri” with actress Zahia Zahiri and in which he also played a role, “Argaz igan Argaz”, a comedy with Abderhmane Ait Elhafed (Agzoum), then the film “Arfoufen”, a production of Mzouda Vision with Mohamed Benhammou.
With Warda Vision, the production company of Larbi Altit which has become Warda Production, he shoots “Tiyiti N’wadan”, a drama in two parts, in which we find him alongside Ahmed Nassih and Abdellatif Atif, two actors from the troupe “Tifawin” theater.
More recently, he appeared on the small screen in the television series “Tigmi Mkourn”, a sitcom directed by Abdelaziz Oussaih and produced by Warda Production alongside other renowned actors such as Lahoucine Bardaouz, Abdellatif Atif and Mbark El Aattach. A course that deserved to be known.
