BPOM is still evaluating the safety of the Covid-19 vaccine

Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – Several countries, such as America, Canada, United Arab Emirates, and Britain, have started vaccinating Covid-19 as a specific preventive measure against the transmission of the virus which has claimed many victims. Indonesia itself is also preparing for Covid-19 vaccination. Vaccinations will only be carried out after an emergency use permit is issued or emergency use autohorization (EUA) from the POM. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) is evaluating the safety and effectiveness of vaccines Covid-19 who arrived in Indonesia some time ago.

This was conveyed by a vaccinologist and a specialist in internal medicine, dr Dirga Sakti Rambe at the dialogue entitled “Vaccines: Facts and Hoaxes”, which was held by the Committee for Handling Covid-19 and National Economic Recovery (KPCPEN), Tuesday (15/12/2020).

It is known that 1,200,568 vials of the Covid-19 vaccine arrived in Indonesia on December 6, and have been received by Bio Farma. A total of 568 vials of which are allocated for quality testing which will be carried out together with Bio Farma and the POM.

Contacted separately, the Director of Drug Registration for the POM, Lucia Rizka Andalusia, said for the EUA vaccine permit Covid-19 in process. However, he did not disclose what kind of process was being carried out. He only asked the public to wait for an official announcement from BPOM.

Even though the permit has not been issued yet, there are dynamics in the community who can’t wait for the next phase of this vaccination program.

“I now see the tendency of many people to speculate, even though this is still a process. The POM is still conducting studies and there will not be any vaccinations before the permission from the POM is issued. This is the government’s effort to ensure the vaccines we use are truly safe and effective, ”said Dirga.

According to Dirga, each country has a different policy in prioritizing which citizens get vaccinated first. Indonesia prioritizes health workers first, who take care of Covid-19 patients on a daily basis. Those at the forefront of health care are at high risk of infection. Especially in Indonesia, vaccines are given to residents aged 18-59 years.

Vaccines are given to healthy people as a preventive measure. Meanwhile, for those who have recovered or are survivors Covid-19 is not a priority target because it is considered to have immunity.

Regarding doubts about vaccines, Dirga said the vaccination process was the government’s effort to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. This disease will not go away on its own. The fact is that there are millions of deaths due to this virus around the world including Indonesia. The economy has taken a hit, and jobs today are difficult for some. Therefore, extra efforts are needed. This includes implementing consistent health protocols, plus vaccinations that will provide specific protection.

“The public must be sure that if there is a permit from the POM, the vaccine will have been confirmed for its safety and effectiveness so that the community does not need to hesitate,” said Dirga.

Dirga also said that Covid-19 really exists. The disease, which is caused by the SARS Cov-2 virus, has a wide spectrum of symptoms in sufferers, ranging from asymptomatic at all to having severe symptoms which make the identification process of patients more difficult. In fact, research shows that 40% of Covid-19 patients are asymptomatic. Even so, it is important to know whether symptomatic or not, all Covid-19 patients can infect other people.

A Covid-19 survivor Cherryl Hatumesen was one of those who initially had symptoms and finally took a swab test and tested positive. Cherryl said that the Covid-19 virus does exist. Therefore, while waiting for the vaccine, 3M’s health protocol, namely wearing a mask, maintaining distance and washing hands with soap must still be carried out.

“Dealing with Covid-19 also requires maturity, not to be afraid to admit that you are infected in order to protect the people around us,” said Cherryl.

Cherryl said, before Covid-19 arrived in Indonesia, many people underestimated health problems because they thought they were strong. After being treated for Covid-19, it was just realized that maintaining personal health, including diet, must be maintained. In addition to increasing protein to increase body immunity, 3M, namely wearing masks, maintaining distance and washing hands, must always be done. By implementing 3M strictly, according to Cherryl, it was evident in his office that no one had contracted it.
