Boycott President Rumen Radev’s New Year’s Speech Gains Momentum on Facebook: Yellow Vests Bulgaria Campaign

An online campaign to boycott President Rumen Radev’s New Year’s speech is gaining momentum on the Internet. Only in the first 15 hours since the creation of the event on Facebook, more than 5,000 users of the social network expressed interest in it.

The initiative entitled “National TV shutdown at 11:55 p.m. on December 31” is of the “Yellow Vests Bulgaria” group, fighting for direct democracy and social justice.

“Turning off the TVs at 11:55pm on 12/31/23 so we don’t spoil the New Year’s mood. Let’s ring in the New Year without monkey bars together! #IMPIRECHMONT,” organizers wrote in the description of their latest campaign, launched in the late hours of Christmas Eve.

Tonight, Radev will attend the “Bulgarian Christmas” charity performance, which is traditionally held under the patronage of the head of state. The President and his wife Desislava Radeva will be among the special guests at the “Ivan Vazov” National Theater in Sofia for the celebratory concert at 8:00 p.m.

The initiative is being held for the 21st consecutive year. In 2023, the campaign is entitled “Give hope to a child in need” and is in support of children’s surgery. The goal this year is to support the treatment of hundreds of Bulgarian children, as well as to provide high-tech equipment for children’s wards and clinics in the country.

“Let it be clear, “Bulgarian Christmas does not seize or limit the responsibility of the state, but over the years it has become a moral standard and a corrective for the institutions. Because it clearly proved that much more can be achieved with much less money,” said Radev at the launch of the campaign in early November.

The charity concert will be broadcast live on BNT and BNR. Those wishing to support the cause can send an SMS to the number 1117. Additional information about “Bulgarian Christmas”, as well as the other ways in which a donation can be made, are indicated on the website of the charity initiative.
