New York City records its first day without deaths from Covid-19

The city of New York, which in the past was the epicenter of the epidemic of coronavirus in the United States , just report your first day with zero deaths confirmed or probable by Covid-19 since the virus hit New York State.

The milestone was achieved Sunday on initial data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. It marked the end of a four-month period since the city reported its first death by Covid-19 March 11th. The confirmed daily death count peaked on April 7, with 597 deaths. It was reported that another 216 people likely died from the virus even though there were no positive lab tests that day.

In New York City alone, more than 18,600 people have died with Covid-19

“New Yorkers have been the heroes of this story, going above and beyond to stay safe,” said City Council spokeswoman Avery Cohen in an emailed statement.

New York state reported five deaths on Sunday, but did not specify where they occurred. The highest number of deaths in the entire state was reported on April 9, with 799. New York City has reported a total of 18,670 confirmed deaths from Covid-19 and 4,613 probable deaths.

State and local data often do not match, and the figures may change due to delays in laboratory results, as some deaths initially reported as probable may later change for confirmation.

On Saturday, another 341 people tested positive for coronavirus in New York City, a rate of 1.3%, according to state data. The city began phase three of the restart of activity on Monday, allowing the opening of beauty salons, tanning studios and dog races.

On-premises restaurant services in the city have been postponed indefinitely as other states, including Texas and Florida, have seen spikes in new cases following the reopening of bars and restaurants.

“In the absence of national leadership, our city has stepped forward to show what it means to reopen safely,” Cohen said. “With cases on the rise across the country, we know we still cannot lower our guard and will continue to do everything we can to fight the virus together.”

Washington DC has also seen a decline in coronavirus deaths this month. Figures released by the mayor’s office on Sunday showed no new deaths in the past three days.

In the United States, the total deaths reported by Covid-19 were 134,904 as of Sunday, 0.4% more on the day.
