Boston Study Reveals Why Blood Type A Is Easier To Get Covid-19

Suara.com – A recent study shows a link between blood type and the severity of the infection Covid-19.

It was found that group A was more easily infected with the SARS CoV 2 virus, which causes Covid-19 disease compared to other blood groups.

In this study, scientists focused on a viral protein called receptor binding domain (RBD), which is the part of the virus that attaches to host cells in the human body, or healthy cells that viruses target to infect the body.

The results found that the RBD virus more strongly attracts respiratory cells, in people with blood type A. This research has been published in the journal Blood Advances on March 3, 2021.

“Very interestingly, this study shows that the RBD SARS CoV 2 virus prefers blood group A antigens in human respiratory cells,” said Study Researcher Dr. Sean Stowell of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, citing Webmd, Saturday (6/3/2021).

The reason is according to Dr. Stowell, blood type is a destiny that cannot be changed, and has been inherited from parents. But once the knowledge is known, finding solutions or preventive methods becomes easier.

“If we can understand how the virus infects the body with certain blood types, we might be able to find new drugs or prevention methods,” said Dr. Stowell.

But unfortunately, these findings cannot fully describe or predict how the corona virus affects patients with certain blood types, because it requires further research.

“Our research is not the only method that can be accounted for clinically or in medical practice,” concluded Dr. Stowell.
