Boris says that protesters “have no right to attack police”. UK fears rising Covid-19 cases after protests – Obser …

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Sunday that protesters who assaulted police officers during anti-racism protests in the UK will be held to justice.

“People have the right to protest peacefully and to observe social distance, but they have no right to attack the police”, wrote Boris Johnson on Twitter.

“These demonstrations have been subverted by criminality – and they are a betrayal of the cause they intend to serve. Those responsible will be called to account, ”added the British Prime Minister.

London has been the stage for some of biggest manifestations anti-racism in recent days, following the death of African American citizen George Floyd at the hands of the American police in Minneapolis, United States.

In the British capital, in the past few days, tens of thousands of people have joined Parliament and the US embassy in the United Kingdom. The largest gatherings took place on Saturday, the day for which protests were scheduled in several cities around the world, including in Portugal.

In London, 14 Metropolitan Police officers were injured during clashes with some protesters in the center of the capital, according to Commissioner Cressida Dick – who stressed that the protesters involved in the clashes were a minority in a mostly peaceful protest.

The British Government has already spoken out against peaceful protests in the UK due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Also on Sunday, British Health Minister Matt Hancock said in a statement Sky News interview that the possibility that the number of Covid-19 cases in the country will skyrocket following the protests “is undoubtedly a risk”.

“I strongly support the arguments of those who are speaking out in favor of greater equality and against discrimination, but the virus does not discriminate. Joining in large groups is temporarily against the rules precisely because it increases the risk of spreading the virus, ”said Hancock.

“Therefore, I ask all people who are demonstrating, and I support you in that argument, not to spread this virus, which has already caused so much damage and which we are beginning to control”, added the minister.

The United Kingdom registered this Sunday the lowest daily number of deaths by Covid-19. Between Saturday and Sunday, 77 people died in the country, bringing the total number to 40,542 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The number of new cases diagnosed in the last 24 hours was 1,326, which increased the total number of Covid-19 cases in the country to 286,194. So far, the country has performed more than 5.5 million tests on Covid-19.
