Bologna, parachute accident: the carabiniere hero of the A14 is dying

We remember many Massimo Piras, very nice and very gritty face: last August this 49-year-old carabiniere saved from the flames, on the A14 in Bologna, some Bulgarian boys involved in the explosion of a tanker full of LPG that had buffered a truck . Yesterday the non-commissioned officer, commander of the Borgo Panigale mobile radio nucleus, had an accident landing with a parachute – a sport he is passionate about – on the airfield of Molinella, in the Bologna area.

The Rest of the Pug, who broke the news, says that the soldier, originally from Nuoro, father of two children, must have miscalculated the path of arrival on the ground, falling disastrously. Now very serious.

Maybe a wrong move

The parachute opened without any problem but in the last stretch before landing – reads the Bologna newspaper in the news by Matteo Radogna – Massimo made a mistake in maneuvering, a few meters from the ground alongside a pond. The fall was disastrous and the non-commissioned officer lost consciousness on impact. 118 emergency services arrived on the scene, first with the ambulance, then with the helicopter rescue. For at least an hour, the health staff provided the care on the turf near the sheds with the equipment and small aircraft. Piras was then loaded with the stretcher on the helicopter to be transported to the Maggiore hospital in Bologna.

A heroic rescue

The very sporty marshal, last August – together with other carabinieri and policemen – had literally saved the life of about twenty Bulgarian boys on board a bus that followed the tank. We went back to the barracks because we were in a cover car for another service – he said -. Practically from via Marco Emilio Lepido we saw this cloud of fire and very high smoke, at least two or three hundred meters.

We knew immediately that it was not a car that had burned down, like a truck. We called 112 and then took action – he minimized with journalists – to drive people, who were at least forty, away and block traffic. What Massimo did with his colleagues at the time was for a much more noble than what he repeated in his meager story: while the tank was burning, the military and agents all threw themselves into that terrifying Armageddon extracting the motorists and the boys on the bus. A lightning-fast rescue, at the risk of their lives, before the tank exploded, fortunately investing everyone with minor consequences.

(Later Massimo was rewarded by the Bulgarian consul for giving first aid to the boys on a trip after the ruinous explosion of the tanker. Last May the marshal received the gold medal for civilian value from the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on the occasion of the 205 anniversary of the founding of the Arma. Forza, Massimo)
