The young hockey defender Luke Prokop informed before the premiere participation in the NHL overseas camp on social networks that he is gay.
Still only 19-year-olds, who spent other seasons in the junior WHL on the Calgary Hitmen, belong to the NHL club Nashville Predators. The organization chose him in last year’s draft of newcomers in the 3rd round.
“It was a difficult journey I had to go through in my life, but now I can’t be happier that I decided to inform myself about it. I’ve been dreaming of becoming an NHL player since I was a child. I believe that only an authentic life can help me on the way to fulfill my dreams, ” wrote Prokop.
According to the AP agency, none of the active NHL players have admitted to homosexuality. Prokop believes that his move will show that even gays are welcome members of the hockey community.
Canadian Press Hockey Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a press release that he was proud of the young defender and thanked him for “sharing the truth and courage.”
“I share his belief that his confession will become commonplace in the hockey community. LGBTQ players, coaches or other staff can only devote themselves fully to their work if they can live their lives to the full. We do not take this first step lightly.” said Bettman. He also pledged that the NHL will do everything to make the experience of the young hockey player enjoyable and positive. Profilige also wants to seek the support of players who in the future will want to follow the same path as Luke Prokop.
The management of the Nashville Predators also expressed support for the young hockey player. “We are proud of Luke for his courage in finding and revealing his secret. In the coming days, months and years, we will support him,” it is stated in the statement of “predators”.
“I no longer have to worry about hiding who I am. I may be a new member of the community, but I want to know more about the strong and resilient people who have been here before me and we have paved the way in this direction, so I can feel comfortable in that direction, “ added Prokop.
