Metro actor Michael Stuhlbarg was a victim of a random attack by a homeless man near Central Park on the Upper East Side on Sunday night, according to the police. Stuhlbarg, known for his role in “Boardwalk Empire,” was walking near East 90th and East Drive around 7:45 p.m. when the homeless man, Xavier Israel, 27, struck him in the back of the neck with a rock.

Stuhlbarg’s attack occurred less than 2 miles away from where his “Boardwalk Empire” character, Arnold Rothstein, was fatally shot in the HBO drama series. Authorities reported that Xavier Israel, who is homeless, has a history of violence, including two previous assault charges and a robbery, all of which took place in January 2022.

At the time of the attack, Israel was on parole for an attempted robbery. Stuhlbarg exhibited bravery by chasing after Israel, before he was eventually apprehended by police stationed outside the Russian Consulate at 9 E. 91st St. Israel was taken into custody without incident and charged with assault.

Eye-witness Account

A witness informed the police that she observed Israel picking up the rock and throwing it into a crowd. Fortunately, Stuhlbarg did not seek medical assistance, despite experiencing pain and bruising on the back of his neck, as reported by the police and sources.

Michael Stuhlbarg, who has been in New York, is currently preparing to star in the new Broadway play, “Patriots,” written by “The Crown” creator Peter Morgan. The play explores the rise of Vladimir Putin, with Stuhlbarg portraying Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky. The production begins preview performances on Monday.
