BMW makes salary managers dependent on achieving climate targets

BMW wants to reduce the CO2 emissions of its cars by a third in ten years. And if that does not work, the managers of the German car manufacturer will notice in their salary, the company announced today.

“We will be measuring and reporting our progress year after year. And that will impact executive and top managers’ fees,” said director Oliver Zipse. In its own words, environmental protection is becoming one of the building blocks of the company’s strategy. “The fight against climate change and our use of raw materials are decisive for the future of our society and therefore also of the BMW group,” says Zipse.

BMW is fully committed to electric driving to meet the emission targets and to compete with competitors. From 2023, at least twelve different models will have to run entirely electrically. BMW aims to have seven million electric cars on the road by 2030.

At the moment, BMW has nine hybrid models and only one model, the i3, that runs entirely electrically. The iX3, a fully electric SUV, will be added early next year.
