The value of the crypto currency bitcoin has risen above $ 60,000 for the first time on Saturday, according to figures from CoinMarketCap. At around 12.45 pm, a bitcoin was worth $ 60,012.78 (converted more than 50,200 euros), an increase of more than 5.5 percent.
With the increase, bitcoin reached a new record high for the umpteenth time this year. The old record was reached on February 28, when the value of the bitcoin did not exceed a little more than 58,000 dollars (about 48,500 euros). Since then, the share price has slumped again, after critical voices from, among others, the new-born US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
The crypto currency has been on the rise for months: in the past six months, the price of a bitcoin has risen by more than 350 percent.
Bitcoin received a strong boost in February when multi-billionaire and Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that he had invested $ 1.5 billion (1.25 billion euros) in the digital currency. He added that the crypto coin can now also be used to buy Tesla cars.
Another reason why bitcoin is doing better and better is that worldwide large investors (such as pension funds and insurers) are increasingly looking to digital coins as an investment. There are also more and more countries that come up with legislation for this form of investment, which means that crypto currencies are increasingly accepted.
