Birthday Surprise Party Ends Tragedy, 18 Family Members contracted Covid-19

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Ron Barbosa and his family are indeed close to each other. Living in the Dallas area, United States, they often visit each other almost every day. That habit also continued during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Similarly, when they went to play golf together and held a surprise party to celebrate the birthday of one of the Barbosa family members last month. However, the joy that was felt when the moment turned into a tragedy after 18 people contracted Covid-19.

Three of these family members even had to be hospitalized. They are Barbosa’s 88-year-old father, her 86-year-old mother, and her sister who is undergoing breast cancer chemotherapy.

“Everyone says, ‘Oh, this is my family. I’m going to meet my brother. I’m going to meet my cousin,’ and they think it’s a safe word,” Barbosa said, starting his story at BuzzFeed News, quoted Monday (6/29/2020).

At first they were not sure if the virus had spread among family members after attending a birthday party on May 30, 2020. Barbosa herself did not participate in the meeting.

Over time, he believes the tragedy experienced by his family began with a party that weekend. He believes, his nephew who hosted the party, was the first to contract Covid-19 at his workplace.

When the party was held, he experienced a cough. In the morning, some men in the family went to play golf together, and Barbosa assumed they might also have contracted Covid-19.

“The next thing you need to know, my two nieces live next to him. They have the same cough and diarrhea, body ache, and they are starting to get sick,” Barboda said. “On the 6th (June), there were many symptoms. And on the 9th, the condition of the people began to be very bad. And on the 13th, (my family) had to take my sister and my mother to the hospital,” Barbosa said.
