The 27-year-old actor Jonathan Berlin is one of the signatories of the #actout manifesto, which is aimed at decision-makers in the film and television industry and the general public.

#Actout is backed by 185 film and TV stars who are lesbian, gay, queer, bisexual, non-binary and / or trans. The young star is one of 185 actors who profess to be gay.

The debate that has now started is making waves in the media. It remains to be seen whether it will be permanent.

You have known his face for a long time. We have had Jonathan Berlin on our radar for a long time and now that he is one of the 185 who started this overdue campaign “Recognition and Diversity in Theater, Film and Television”, we want to introduce him a little more closely. The man is worth it!

In an interview with the SZ he said about the campaign: “I have long since believed that I am part of an open, diverse society, but that also means that minorities are visible.” On Instagram, the sympathetic star becomes even more concrete in an emotional post : “As a homosexual young man – one of the many in the media, entertainment, sports etc. – I no longer want to be part of a cycle that means the opposite of truthfulness and is characterized by hiding, structural stigmata and prejudice.” He wants to encourage everyone , “To love those you love and to lead the life you want to lead.”

His career began with puppetry

Who is this Jonathan Berlin?

It should always be something artistic. First the puppet show and marionette theater, but then the talent ended up on the stage in the Junge Theater in Ulm. Before he even went to drama school in Munich, he had already gained a lot of stage experience. From classic Shakespeare to the modern play by Julie Zeh, Jonathan was allowed to try himself out before the training even started. In 2015 he finished the Otto Falckenberg School, where so many popular actors were trained before him, e.g. Katja Riemann, Jens Harzer and Joachim Król.

Beyond the theater stage

In one of the first roles on TV, he had the now very prominent Liv Lisa Fries as a play partner. In “And Tomorrow I Am Dead” (2012), Jonathan plays a boy whose sister has cystic fibrosis. It got a little more extensive in 2015 in the exciting ZDF three-part series “Tannbach – Fate of a Village”. In the epic, the time of the Third Reich is also exemplarily reflected in the imaginary village of Tannbach. Big conflicts under the magnifying glass with villagers.

Jonathan plays one of them. He’s Walter, the innkeeper’s son, who really got involved with the Hitler Youth as a teenager. After the war and the division of the village into East and West, he shifts work on the inner-German border.

Also worth seeing is “The Ladder of Heaven – Longing for Tomorrow”. The post-war period in Germany is an issue in production. Christiane Paul is a rubble woman and Jonathan Berlin plays her son Michel. Both try to get the family through the difficult times.

This was followed by guest appearances in popular series such as “Der Alte”, “Notruf Hafenkante”, “Der Bergdoktor” and “SOKO Munich”.

Finally a leading role!

The fairy tale “Prince Himmelblau and Fee Lupine” (2016) was a real success. Jonathan took the lead role, the prince sky blue. In it, his Highness goes through the process of asserting himself and being allowed to choose his bride himself. After so much sky blue and perfect world, the opposite follows – another ZDF crime thriller.

In “Gnadenlos” (2017) Jonathan plays a drug addict young man who prostitutes himself. Of all things, the juvenile judge Dr. Kleinert (Heino Ferch), a tough guy, becomes his lover. Make sure to remember and take a look at the opportunity!

Established with cinema and television films

In 2017, Jonathan made the final leap into the cinema and into the next higher league of German film actors. The youth drama “Die Freibadclique” revolves around a handful of friends in World War II and is pretty bitter, but really successful at the box office.

We also liked Jonathan as a regular patron Patrick in the comedy “After-Work Beer”. The film premiered at the Berlinale in 2018 and became a hit among German films – also worth watching. “Kruso” is set at the time of the collapse of the GDR in 1989, did not come to the cinema, but is definitely an eye-catcher! Albrecht Schuch, who won the German Film Prize 2020 for “Systemsprenger” and “Berlin Alexanderplatz” twice, plays Kruso and the one who gets the ball rolling on Hiddensee, Ed, portrays Jonathan.

As a final example of the solid path to becoming a character actor, we have to mention the three-part series “Price of Freedom”. The turning point after the collapse of the GDR is discussed. Great actors: Barbara Auer, Nadja Uhl, Oliver Masucci and – Jonathan Berlin!

“The White House on the Rhine”

What is coming is “The White House on the Rhine”, a large ARD second hamlet whose broadcast is planned for the 4th quarter of 2921. With Jonathan Berlin in the lead role.

Bad Godesberg, 1918: Emil Dreesen returns from the First World War, battered in his soul. His parents’ house, the once magnificent Rheinhotel Dreesen, resembles a military camp. While his father Fritz wants to defend himself against the French occupiers, Emil relies on an arrangement with them. For the junior manager, he has to look ahead: In order to attract guests, the 21-year-old relies on culture and new incentives. He receives support from his Jewish grandmother Adelheid and his younger sister Ulla, who does not want to conform to the popular image of women. For decades the hotel has been a meeting place for the Jewish bourgeoisie, then a refuge for the Nazi elite. Guests like Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo join hands with Adolf Hitler and his followers … (KW / RV)
