Biden Wants G20 to Present Ukraine If Indonesia Invites Russia

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

President of the United States of America, Joe Biden evaluate Ukraine deserves to be invited to attend the Summit G20 in Bali if Indonesia continues to invite Russia.

He stressed that the United States supported that Russian President Vladimir Putin was not invited because he had launched an invasion of Ukraine.

However, if Indonesia as the host and other countries still want to invite Russia, then the US feels the need for Ukraine to be invited even though it is not included in the list of G20 countries.

“If Indonesia and other countries do not agree, then in my view it is necessary to invite Ukraine to attend the meeting,” Biden said quoting AFP, Friday (25/3).

It is known, Ukraine is not a member of the G20. The countries included in the G20 include, the US, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, China, Canada, the European Union, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkish and English.

Previously, the Indonesian Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Dian Triansyah Djani said that Indonesia invited all G20 member countries, including Russia, to the G20 Summit in Bali.

Indonesia, he said, would continue to follow the prevailing presidential principles. Thus, all members of the G20, including Russia, were invited to attend the international forum.

“As a presidency, of course, and in accordance with previous presidencies, it is to invite all members of the G20,” said Dian during an online press conference, Thursday (24/3).

Separately, the Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Lyudmila Vorobieva, said that President Vladimir Putin plans to attend the G20 Summit which will take place in Bali at the end of 2022.

“Depending on the situation, so far he (Putin) is willing to come to the G20 summit,” Vorobieva said.

China supports if Russian President Vladimir Putin is present amid criticism from Western countries regarding the invasion of Ukraine. Chinese Foreign Ministry Wang Wenbin said Russia was an important member of the G20.

“No member has the right to dismiss another country as a member. The G20 must implement real multilateralism, strengthen unity and cooperation,” Wang said at a press briefing, as quoted by Reuters, Wednesday (23/3).

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Indonesia, Vasyl Hamianin, democracies rejected the arrival of the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, if he really would attend the G20 Summit in Bali.
