Biden and Erdoan Meet, Optimistic About Relationship but No Breakthrough

BRUSSELS – President United States of America (USA) Joe Biden and President Turkey Tayyip Erdogan sounded optimistic after their first face-to-face talks on Monday.

However, they did not announce any major breakthroughs in relations between the two NATO allies. They are still at odds about weapons made in Russia, Syria, Libya and other issues.

“We had positive and productive meetings, mostly one-on-ones,” Biden told a news conference after their meeting in Brussels.

“Our team will continue our discussions and I am sure we will make real progress with Turkey and the United States,” he said.

Erdogan called his talks with Biden on the sidelines of the NATO summit “productive and sincere.”

“We think there is no problem between the US and Turkey relations that cannot be resolved and that the area of cooperation for us is richer and bigger than the problem,” he said.

Despite their upbeat tone publicly, no one provided details on how exactly they would improve relations or devise steps that would help ease tensions between the NATO allies.

Turkey, with NATO’s second-largest military, has angered its allies in the alliance by buying Russian surface-to-air missiles and intervening in the wars in Syria and Libya.

It is also in a stalemate with Greece and Cyprus over territory in the Eastern Mediterranean.

As president, Biden has adopted a colder tone than his predecessor Donald Trump towards Erdogan.
