Due to the corona crisis, the presentation of the American Grammy Awards looked different than usual this year. Only the performers and nominees were welcome to the show on Sunday. The presentation of the music awards was dominated by women.
Taylor Swift was nominated for six Grammy Awards. With Folklore she won the prize for the best album of the year. This makes her the first woman to win this award three times.
Beyoncé was seen as the biggest contender this year. The singer received no fewer than nine nominations. She won two individual awards (best R&B performance and best video clip) and two more awards together with Megan Thee Stallion. This has made the singer the most awarded female Grammy winner ever.
Along with her nine-year-old daughter Blue Ivy, SAINt JHN and Wizkid, Beyoncé won the Grammy for best music video for the song Brown Skin Girl. The award was announced before the official 63rd Grammy Awards ceremony began on Sunday evening.
Billie Eilish and HER also won prizes
Billie Eilish was the big winner last year with no less than five prizes. This year everything i wanted named record of the year. She also received an award for her James Bond soundtrack No Time To Die.
Rapper Megan Thee Stallion received the Grammy for the best new artist on Sunday evening. Earlier in the day it was announced that the 26-year-old artist had also won awards for her rap on the remix of her hit. Savage she made with Beyoncé.
R&B singer HER won the Grammy for song of the year for I Can’t Breathe, an emotional song she wrote in response to the protests against police brutality following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, USA.
Harry Styles opened the show with Watermelon Sugar and won his first Grammy for that song in the category of best solo performance in the genre of pop.
The Weeknd boycot de Grammy’s
The Weeknd, who has won three Grammy Awards in the past, never wants to compete for these music awards again. The 31-year-old singer has not been nominated this year while his album After Hours produced several hits and was received with praise by critics.
According to The Weeknd, the organization behind the music awards is corrupt and the nomination process must become more transparent, he said last year. Anonymous committees play a major role in that process.
The Grammy Awards were broadcast from Los Angeles. Talk show host Trevor Noah took care of the presentation. Much of the awards were presented by it staff of event locations.
