Between frying fat and pineapples: more than 1500 kilos of coke intercepted in the port of Rotterdam

The police and customs authorities intercepted two consignments of cocaine in the port of Rotterdam last week, it has now been announced.

Last Thursday, 930 kilos of coke were found in a container from Curaçao that was loaded with used frying fat. And on Wednesday, a 600-pound consignment was discovered in a shipping container filled with pineapples from Costa Rica.

According to the police, the companies to which the containers were shipped, in Ter Aar and in the Westland respectively, probably knew nothing about the drug smuggling. The cocaine has been destroyed.

Last year, more than 40,000 kilos of cocaine were detected in containers in the port of Rotterdam, about 7,000 more than in 2019. Researchers previously said that this is just the tip of the iceberg. Only a small part of the 7.5 million containers that pass through Rotterdam every year are checked.
