The following message is not one that employees want to hear now, announced Vishal Garg, 43, the CEO of the American online mortgage company Better.com in a Zoom call with 900 participants last Wednesday. “If you take part in this call, you will be part of the unfortunate group that will be fired,” Garg said. The employment will be terminated here and now with immediate effect. An angry employee filmed the call.

Accused of unproductivity
With the Zoom call, the CEO cut nine percent of his workforce – including the entire team dealing with equality, racism and sexism in the workplace. Vishal Garg said the “market has changed,” meaning drastic cuts to the $ 7 billion company’s workforce will be required to survive. But that’s not all: He also accused the employees of being unproductive. “Get better training,” he added.

The cursing employee later posted the video on social media. The CEO joined in among the indignant comments. Of the employees he had fired, “at least 250 people worked an average of two hours a day while they stamped eight hours,” he wrote. “You have stolen our customers who pay the bills, who in turn pay our bills.”

Remaining employees are closely monitored
Garg said the company began reviewing employee productivity data four weeks ago – including missed phone charges, the number of calls made and received, employees being late for customer appointments, and other metrics. “We saw some alarming statistics and a number of our customers were not getting the service they deserved from our teammates,” said the CEO.

The remaining employees were also stunned by the nature of this mass layoff, reports “Daily Mail”. In addition, Garg said in another company-wide video call that the performance of the remaining employees would be closely monitored.

After the layoffs, 9,000 women and men in the US, India and the UK still work for Better.com (ct)
